The first Name your child says, without yet knowing it

He has said it since he could talk: in the bismillah before eating, in the “inshaAllah” he repeats after you, in the first surah he learnt by heart. Then one day, between two games, the question drops: “Mum, who is Allah?” This book is made for that moment.

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

“To Allah belong the most beautiful Names, so call on Him by them.” Quran, surah الأعراف (Al-Aʿrâf, The Heights), 7:180. This is the programme of the whole collection, and it begins here.

The story

Abel hears this Name everywhere and realises he does not know what he is saying. Page after page, a gentle voice tells him that الله (Allah) is the Name God gave Himself, the supreme Name, the one that gathers all the others. That we cannot see Him, and yet everything around us speaks of Him. That He knows everything and hears everything. Abel gets carried away, gets it wrong, starts again, like every child; and his mum walks with him, with the right words.

What your child takes away

  • The meaning of the Name he says every day: a word that becomes conscious.
  • A first true idea of God: He is not something we see, He is the One who knows everything. The words were chosen to say nothing of Allah that He has not said of Himself.
  • The habit of looking for His signs around him, which is what the activity at the end of the book is for.

The contemplative activity, to share

The book does not end with a lesson to recite, but with a moment of contemplation, parent and child together. We cannot see the wind, and yet we feel it on our face. From there, the child learns to recognise by himself, in his day, what speaks of the One we cannot see. This is the meaning of the prophetic saying reported by at-Tabarânî: « تفكّروا في آلاء الله ولا تفكّروا في الله » (reflect on the blessings of Allah, and do not reflect on Allah Himself). Every volume in the collection ends this way.

What this volume deliberately does not teach

It does not try to picture Allah, to imagine Him, or to compare Him to anything. It teaches His Name and what He tells us about it. That is the line of the whole collection, and it is held page after page.

An audio ebook: every page speaks

Every page is read by an English narration, at the child’s pace. A Name is pronounced, and to say it badly is already to distort it: the narration gives the child the right pronunciation from the very first listen. He can listen alone, or with you in the evening. Audio EPUB file, readable on tablet, phone and computer with Apple Books and EPUB apps that support audio. Immediate download after purchase, three downloads allowed, no time limit.

English edition; also available in French and Arabic

This page sells the English edition, with its narration in English. The same volume exists as a French edition and an Arabic edition, each with its own narration, sold separately.

Volume 2 of the collection “The Names of Allah explained to Abel”

Volume 1: Who is Allah? The introductory volume, where Abel asks the big question. Volume 2: the Name الله (Allah), this book. Volume 3: the Name الأحد (Al-Ahad, the One). All three together: the complete pack, about 14% less than the three volumes bought separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need a screen? Yes, it is a digital book. But it reads like a book, together, page by page, and the audio can be listened to without looking. It is screen time with real content, and it ends with a moment with no screen at all.

From what age? From three with a parent who turns the pages and carries on the conversation; around five the child listens on his own.

What is the difference with Volume 1? Volume 1 asks “who is Allah?” and answers with what we can know of Him. Volume 2 enters the Name itself, the one the child already says.

How do I receive the book? The download link appears as soon as payment goes through and is sent to you by email. You can download the file three times, with no time limit.

Is the content religiously checked? The text of the book was read and approved by a sheikh, and the author holds the attestation. The text of this presentation page is the author’s own.
